Most freelance proposals lose the project the moment they lead with the freelancer instead of the client. Present your solution and approach
Lay out how you'll solve it, in plain terms. Not an exhaustive technical plan — a clear, confident outline of your approach and why it works for their situation. This is where your expertise shows. The client should finish this section thinking "this person knows exactly how to handle my problem."
Define scope, deliverables, and timeline
Spell out exactly what they'll get and by when. Specific deliverables, a realistic timeline, and — crucially — what's not included. Clear scope protects both sides and signals professionalism. It also sets up your contract, which should mirror it.
Show relevant proof
Now — and only now — bring in your credibility, and keep it relevant. One or two examples of similar problems you've solved, ideally with results: "I did this for a comparable company and their signups rose 40%." Proof tied to their specific problem is persuasive; a generic list of everything you've ever done is noise.
State the price with confidence
Present the price plainly, without apology or padding. If you've established value in the sections above, the number feels justified rather than shocking. Offering two or three tiered options can work well — it shifts the client's question from "should I hire them?" to "which option do I want?" and often lifts the average deal size.
Make the next step obvious
End with a clear call to action: how to say yes and what happens next. "To get started, reply to approve and I'll send the agreement and deposit invoice — I can begin [date]." Don't leave the client wondering how to proceed; ambiguity at the finish line stalls deals that were ready to close.
Present Price as an Investment, Not a Cost
How you frame the number matters as much as the number itself. A client weighing a $4,000 website against the additional revenue a better-converting site will generate sees an investment with a return. The same $4,000 presented with no context looks like an expense to minimize. Wherever you can, connect your price to the value or outcome it produces — this is the same logic that lets specialists and project-based pricers charge more than the hourly-rate math alone would suggest. You're not selling hours; you're selling a result the client wants.
Follow Up Without Being Pushy
A proposal sent is not a proposal decided. Clients get busy, priorities shift, and a perfectly good proposal can stall simply because no one circled back to it. Yet most freelancers send a proposal and then wait in silence, reading the lack of response as a no — when it's usually just inertia. A short, friendly follow-up a few days after sending recovers a meaningful share of deals that would otherwise drift away: "Wanted to make sure this reached you and see if any questions came up — happy to adjust anything." Keep it light and helpful, not anxious or apologetic. If you still hear nothing, one more nudge a week later is reasonable before you let it go. Following up isn't pestering; it's the difference between a proposal that closes and one that quietly dies in an inbox. Mistakes That Lose Deals
